What are life transitions?

Life transitions, even the ones we choose, can shake us in ways we don't expect. Starting or ending a relationship, becoming a parent, changing careers, moving to a new place, graduating, retiring, losing a loved one — these shifts ask us to let go of who we were and figure out who we're becoming. That in-between space can feel disorienting, lonely, or just plain hard. You don't have to navigate it alone. Therapy can help you process what you're leaving behind, clarify what matters to you, and build the foundation for what comes next.

Symptoms may include:

  • Feeling lost, uncertain, or like you've lost your sense of direction

  • Grief over what you're leaving behind, even if you chose the change

  • Anxiety about the future or fear of making the wrong decisions

  • Identity confusion — not knowing who you are outside of a former role

  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or staying motivated

  • Feeling disconnected from your usual support system

  • Comparing yourself to others or feeling like you're falling behind

  • Mood swings or emotional sensitivity that feels out of character

  • Struggling to find meaning or excitement in day-to-day life
